Rui Gardner is Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. With a background in mathematics, physics, and biology, he brings an interdisciplinary approach to cytometry, blending technical innovation with scientific impact. After beginning his career in mathematical biology, Rui earned his PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2004, focusing on oxidative mechanisms of superoxide dismutase across institutions including the Univ of Michigan and Gulbenkian Institute. With nearly 20 years of experience, he led the Gulbenkian cytometry facility for a decade before joining MSKCC in 2016. Rui is an advocate for collaboration and education having held leadership roles in ISAC, ABRF, CTLS, SIC, and FlowTex. He served on the ISAC Council (2012–2016) and helped launch its Shared Resource Lab programs. A passionate educator, he has delivered hundreds of seminars and promotes global cytometry education through efforts like the “Open FlowCytometry” YouTube channel.
