Gabriela Martins graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1988. She did her residency in Clinical Pathology at the Instituto Português de Oncologia FG – Porto (IPO-Porto). She obtained her Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Immunopathology at the University Hospital Center of Porto (CHUP) in 1997. She has remained with IPO-Porto as an assistant clinical pathologist (since 1996) and consultant pathologist (since 2006). She was appointed Director of the Immunology Service in May 2000 and has been responsible for the Flow Cytometry Laboratory for over 20 years. She has a PhD in Oncology from ICBAS, University of Porto, in 2003. Since 2015 she has been coordinator of the Clinical Pathology Internship at the IPO. She holds an MBA in Health Unit Management from UFP and a Competence in Management from the Portuguese Medical Association. She was appointed Director of the Clinical Pathology Service in December 2021.

Her research interests focus mainly on immunophenotyping in oncology for diagnosis, prognosis and detection of minimal residual disease, immunological monitoring by flow cytometry in immunotherapy, extracellular vesicles as biomarkers of cancer metastization, and she is the author or co-author of several research contributions.
